Winning design chosen for new Portman Road playground announced 

The contract for the refurbishment of Portman Road Children’s Playground in west Reading has been awarded to HAGS. 

A public consultation of four shortlisted proposals ran from 8th – 30th July 2021 allowing residents to vote for their preferred option. The winning design, Option 4 by HAGS, received 45% of the vote. 

The planned £94k investment is due to be completed in November 2021. Children of all ages and abilities will benefit from the installation of a mix of accessible equipment including two inclusive multi-units and roundabout, a large basket swing, sensory activity panels for quieter play and a sensory path to navigate through the playground.

Reading Borough Council is inviting residents to vote on their preferred design for the refurbishment of Portman Road Children’s Playground. 

Portman Road Children’s Playground is benefiting from £94k s106 investment. 

The refurbishment and improvement of this playground means it will benefit from: an  inclusive multi-unit which caters for toddlers and juniors, an inclusive roundabout, a large basket swing, a mix of single items of play equipment which provide varied play value, two new benches and the installation of paths to link the playground together, making it more accessible to all. There will also be new surfacing. 

The public consultation will run from 8th July 2021 – 30th July 2021.

Why your views matter

Please vote for either Option 1, Option 2, Option 3 or Option 4.

What happens next

This public consultation closes on 30 July 2021.

The results from the public consultation will form part of the selection process of the winning design. The selection process includes consultation with the Reading Accessibility and Disability Task and Finish Group, Parks Technical Assessment and an assessment of value for money. The winning design for the refurbishment of Portman Road Children’s Playground will be announced in August 2021. The winning design will be available to view here.
