  •  Feedback was positive, with residents stating they were pleased to see the projects, stating that this area needed improvement.
  • The provision of facilities which benefit all ages and abilities was complimented in both schemes.
  • There were concerns raised by local residents over site security during works on site. The need to have precautions in place to prevent unwanted access was something which many people fed back.
  • We received several ideas for other improvements we could make to the park in the future.

We did

Based on your feedback, we awarded the outdoor gym installation contract to The Great Outdoor Gym Company and the BMX track refurbishment contract to Clark and Kent Contractors.

We worked closely with Clark and Kent Contractors, The Great Outdoor Gym Company and RBC Parks team to ensure that the site would remain secure throughout the installation.

We have passed on additional comments / ideas to the parks team and relevant officers in case additional funding becomes available.

Next steps

The outdoor gym was installed and ready for use in December 2020, this will be completed in May 2021.

The BMX track refurbishment began in November 2020 and completed in March 2021. The contractor will return later in the year to complete reinstatement works.

A consultation which ran from the 7th September 2020 – 21st September 2020 gave residents the opportunity to vote for their preferred design for the refurbishment of the BMX track and the installation of a new outdoor gym at Longbarn Lane Recreation Ground.

The gym features 11 pieces of equipment and accommodates up to 25 users at any one time. There are two paths making the gym fully accessible for wheelchair and pushchair users, and a Family Zone including two junior pieces of equipment.

Overview

Reading Borough Council is inviting residents to vote on their preferred design for a new outdoor gym and a BMX track revamp at Longbarn Lane Recreation Ground in south Reading.

Longbarn Lane Recreation Ground has been earmarked for a £155k investment.

Around £75k of this investment will be used to install a new outdoor gym. The council has invited two specialist outdoor gym manufacturers to submit their design ideas for the new outdoor gym. These designs will be used to consult with residents in the surrounding area.

This will include a good mix of robust equipment which is accessible to all. People of all ages and abilities will be able to use and enjoy the equipment installed.

A further £80k will be used to refurbish the existing BMX track.

The BMX track will be remodelled, and a new tarmac surface will be laid, allowing for a greater rider experience. The council has invited two BMX pump track specialists to submit design ideas for the refurbishment of the existing track. These designs will also be used to consult the residents and schools in the local area.

This BMX track will be suitable for all ages and abilities, as well as other activities such as roller-skaters and skateboarders.

The public consultation will take place from the 7 September– 21 September 2020. The winners of each project (whoever receives the most votes) will be announced on the 28th September 2020.

Why your views matter

Reading Borough Council would like you to vote for the design which you prefer for both the BMX Track refurbishment and the installation of the Outdoor Gym. The council wants to collect the public’s views on the desired designs. The aim of these improvement works is to promote physical activity / recreational activity within South Reading.

Please vote for either Option 1 or Option 2 for the BMX Track refurbishment and either Option 1 or Option 2 for the installation of the Outdoor Gym.

What happens next

This public consultation has now closed. The winning design for the BMX Track refurbishment and for the Outdoor Gym installation will be announced on the 28th September 2020.

The winning designs will be available to view here, or in person at South Reading Leisure Centre and Hexham Community Centre.

Work is anticipated to start on site in November 2020.
