Orts Road play area relocation survey

Closed 1 Mar 2019

Opened 14 Feb 2019

Overview

We are proposing to relocate the play area at Lock Place because it is located next to the river which is not an entirely child-friendly environment and the equipment is also getting a bit old and in need of replacement.

We are proposing to relocate it to the grassed area at the junction of Orts Road and Canal Way. This move will include closing the existing play area.  You can see the specific area that we are considering in the maps provided below.

We are also hoping to enhance the whole of the grassed area into an attractive park for all of the community to enjoy.

It is intended that this project will be paid for out of Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL), which is the money that developers are required to pay in connection with new developments. A small proportion (15%) has to be spent on delivering improvements in nearby local communities. The project will not use any council tax or rent monies.

The intention is that the new play area will include various pieces of equipment, including:

  • Natural play
  • Swing
  • Rotary
  • Rockers
  • Climbing equipment
  • Seating / benches

Pictures of the kind of equipment that we are proposing to install are available below. We are also proposing to involve local primary school pupils in helping us to decide and design the final layout and equipment.

We are also holding a drop-in event at St John’s Church Café from 3pm – 8pm on Wednesday 27th February. Please do come along if you would like to discuss these plans in more detail or if you have any questions. Councillors Page, Ayub and Rowland will be present at the drop-in session, along with Council Officers tasked with carrying out this consultation and the Officers responsible for Parks in Reading.
